Wulkow Mycelium Workshop

Let’s talk about — and get our hands on — a material that feels entirely new, yet is rooted in ancient nature: mushrooms!

The raw material comes from mycelium, the underground root network of fungi. It can be shaped into almost any form and achieve different levels of strength. In theory, anyone can grow it themselves — as a sustainable alternative to plastics and climate-damaging “grey energy.” Could this be the miracle material of the future?

This question brought together 21 curious minds for the workshop “The Future is Fungi? Sustainable Design and Construction with Mushrooms”, held on October 29 in Wulkow. Together, we explored and experimented with the potential of this living material — discovering how it could transform the way we design and build for a climate-friendly future. As a hands-on reference, participants co-created a mushroom wall on the first floor of the Ökospeicher.
