Custom Picture Frames – Inspired by the 70s, Made for the Future
This project reimagines picture frames as more than protective borders – they become design statements that connect artwork and space. Drawing inspiration from the sculptural and emotional aesthetics of the 1970s and referencing postmodern design, the frames blend nostalgic ornamentation with a contemporary language.
Ornamental details are reinterpreted and digitally fabricated using 3D printing, then refined by hand to create sustainable, high-quality pieces. The result is a series of custom frames that not only hold art but also stand as expressive objects in their own right – bridging past and future, craft and technology.
Using digital and rapid prototyping techniques, we developed a system that allowed us to visualize and refine each frame before production. The final designs were 3D-printed and carefully post-processed, resulting in unique, pre-fitted frames that not only complemented the artwork but also added sculptural value to the room. The final collection featured 3 different frames, each with a bold and characterful design.
