Frida; they/them
The MycoPouf Frida rethinks furniture fillings and stands as a characteristic demonstrator for a resource-efficient, low-complexity, and scalable use of fungal material as padding. Traditional beanbags are often filled with synthetic substances such as polystyrene or polyester – oil-based, difficult to recycle, and prone to releasing microplastics.
In contrast, MycoPouf relies on mycelium, a by-product of edible mushroom production. This material is insulating, flame-retardant, and fully biodegradable. Frida consists of a washable cover and an inner filling made of cotton, coated with alginate. The coating prevents the release of fine particles through friction and ensures an anti-allergenic design.
The modular beanbag playfully demonstrates how fungal material can be experienced as a versatile alternative and introduces mycelium as a biological option for sustainable fillings. So why would anyone chill on a pile of plastic, when you could sink into a diverse puff of fungi — all while eating grey oyster risotto and supporting an optimistic future with your capitalistic consumption choice?
Let's shape an optimistic future with mycelium materials!
